…have you prayed about it?

I find myself questioning, complaining, and venting to friends and family members quite often, seeking answers, comfort, and peace…you may know where I’m going with this already.

Vacation 2013 019

For example, this is my go-to gal…I thank God she always answers her phone.

However, time and time again I’ll have that one wise friend (Mom) ask that one needed, but not always welcomed question, “Well have you prayed about it?”

The honest answer 9 times out of 10 is no, or not exactly.

Maybe I have prayed about it, but I find myself praying according to my will and not His.

“God this is what I have planned, but I need X, Y, and Z to happen first, okay?” or “Look God, I have this one thing under control and you can just handle that over there?”….HA, as if I have anything under control.

I’ve been really focusing on going to God FIRST with questions, concerns, and rants. Yes,  God will listen to you rant. He is our Father, and I know my Dad has endured many a vent session, bless his heart. So this is how I’m hoping to pray for direction, comfort and rest the next time I find myself confused, lost and maybe a little hurt.

  • Seek answers from God

Matthew 7:7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.

If you don’t ask, you may never know…and if you ask people, don’t expect to get a God answer. He wants to lead us, Jesus is the Good Shepherd for goodness sakes! So ask Him, but be patient…that’s the hard part. I pretty much demand answers from God, “God, I’m asking, now you answer me back right this second or else…” Or even more often I’ll say, “God, you haven’t answered me yet and I think this is the right choice, so here I go…you better stop me now if this isn’t the right way.”

Ask ready to wait for His reply, and ask ready to get some tough answers you really don’t want to hear.

  • Find comfort in God

2 Corinthians 1:3-4 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

When I am distressed or uncomfortable or waiting for those answers, I am the dimmest of lights and the least salty of salts. I’m a joy-sucking, attitude-giving little monster walking around. Harsh, but true. When I focus my heart on God’s steadfast love, I find comfort. He cares for us. He feels our pains. And He is there every step of the way reminding us, “My child, you are worried and upset about many things,  but few things are needed—or indeed only one.” Only He is needed and only He can give us true comfort and care.

  • Gain peace from God

Psalm 23:11 The Lord gives strength to his people, the Lord blesses his people with peace.

Now that we’re waiting for His answers and getting a little more comfortable, maybe even whistling while we work, we need to find true, lasting peace. Not the kind of temporary peace you get from binge watching Gilmore Girls with a tub of ice cream, which looks something like this:

I’m talking about that loving and  lasting peace I find when I turn to His Word and His promises. Words that are perfect and true and promises that will never be broken, reminding my heart and soul that He is in control and He has already overcome the world…so I think He can handle this. He is the Prince of Peace after all.

Psalm 50:15 And call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

I love this verse because of the last clause: and you shall glorify me.

I’m already praising my Lord because I have faith that He will see me through this season of questions, doubt, and concerns. He will deliver us, and when that light at the end of the tunnel comes let’s give Him all the glory.
